DrPinelopi Manousou

Dr Pinelopi Manousou is a clinical and translational hepatologist and Professor of Practice, whose work focuses on metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), liver fibrosis, and microbiome-based therapies. She leads the MASLD Service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and serves as Chief Investigator on multiple academic- and industry-funded clinical studies. She was Chief Investigator for the Eli Lilly Phase II tirzepatide study in MASH and is currently Chief Investigator for the Phase I Novo Nordisk–Parexel MARC1 study, as well as National Lead Investigator for the 89Bio pegozafermin study in NASH. In addition, she is a Principal Investigator in six further MASLD clinical studies.

Her research programme spans the metabolic–viral interface in chronic hepatitis B and MASLD, microbiome-targeted interventions, digital and AI-based quantification of liver fibrosis, and senolytic therapies for MASLD.

Dr Manousou has authored over 110 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including The Lancet, Nature Medicine, and the Journal of Hepatology, with more than 10,000 citations.

She serves on the Board of Directors of the University of Ioannina, is External Affairs Councillor-elect at EASL, and is Communication Lead for the MASLD Special Interest Group of the AASLD. She previously served as Deputy National Specialty Lead for Hepatology at the NIHR Clinical Research Network. She is also a member of the NICE guideline committee on MASLD and Co-Director of the forthcoming WHO Collaborating Centre on Metabolic Liver Diseases at Imperial College London, which will deliver a Pan-European MASLD/MetALD report, a systematic review of prevention strategies, and WHO guidelines and training modules..
