DrPinelopi Manousou

Dr Manousou’s research focuses on the development of mechanism-informed therapies for metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its interaction with chronic liver conditions. Her work spans early- and mid-phase clinical trials targeting key pathogenic pathways, including metabolic–viral interactions in chronic hepatitis B, cellular senescence, and gut–liver axis dysregulation. She leads nationally funded interventional studies, including a UK multicentre Phase II trial of combination semaglutide and tenofovir therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B and MASLD, a proof-of-concept senolytic trial using digoxin, and microbiome-based therapeutic approaches such as faecal microbiota transplantation. These clinical programmes are underpinned by advanced metabolic phenotyping, digital and AI-based quantification of liver fibrosis, and systems biology approaches to define gene regulatory networks in steatotic liver disease. Collectively, her research aims to embed liver health within the broader framework of metabolic disease and to deliver precision, translational advances with direct clinical and policy relevance at national and international level.
