RESEARCH

Emiliano Bilotti’s research is driven by the vision to apply nanotechnology to polymers composites, with the goal to both advance fundamental understanding of polymer composite physics and processing and provide polymer composites with a host of functionalities and properties (e.g electrical and thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, sensing, gas barrier and fire retardancy), for the benefit of different technological sectors and the wider society.

The most recent research focus is on multifunctional polymer composites (for energy storage, energy harvesting, sensing, pyro-resistive self-regulating/over-current protection), high-performance recyclable composites, sustainable composites from natural fibres (silk, collagen) and smart hydrogels for tumour ablation.

Such a variety of functionalities and applications has been achieved via an inter-disciplinary team of researchers (11 Postdocs, 15 PhD students and over 60 Master Students previously supervised to completion) and collaborators – both from academia and industry.

The close collaboration with industry and the passion of knowledge transfer (e.g. Innovate UK funded KTP project - KTP009619 - 1st Prize for KTP “Exceptional Engineering Excellence” Award 2019) has stimulated unique research insights, leading to research excellence combined with industrial impact, quantifiable in filed patents, new commercial products and job created.
