MrAlexander Barclay

Alex Barclay is a healthcare strategy, transformation and capability leader whose work focuses on a recurring challenge in healthcare: how organisations translate ambitious strategies, new technologies and improvement ideas into meaningful, sustained value for patients, staff and health systems.

At Imperial College London, Alex is Head of Education at the Helix Centre within the Institute of Global Health Innovation, and Associate Director of the MSc Healthcare & Design. His work brings together healthcare strategy, human-centred design, organisational capability and applied learning to help healthcare leaders and organisations understand complex challenges, build shared understanding and develop practical routes from ambition to implementation.

A particular focus of his work is the gap between innovation and realised value. He is interested in why promising technologies, transformation programmes and improvement initiatives can struggle to become embedded in everyday healthcare, and in the capabilities, behaviours, methods and organisational conditions required to make change work in practice. This increasingly includes the responsible adoption of AI and other emerging technologies in healthcare.

Alex's career spans healthcare, strategy, innovation, design and organisational transformation. He has worked across the public and private sectors, combining strategic thinking with practical implementation and capability-building. At Imperial, his current work includes developing challenge-led approaches to healthcare capability-building, designing executive and professional programmes around healthcare transformation, innovation, AI and human-centred design, building partnerships with healthcare organisations, and working with healthcare leaders to understand where value becomes stuck between strategic intent and frontline reality.

Across this work, his central interest is in helping organisations become better able to solve complex problems themselves — creating the shared understanding, practical capability and conditions required to turn good ideas into change that lasts.
