BIO
Toni Castells-Delgado is a composer, sound artist, and academic whose work bridges the worlds of music, technology, and biomedical research. He lectures in Sound and Music Technology at Imperial College London and the University of West London, specialising in acoustics, composition, and interdisciplinary approaches to sound. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds a Certificate in Advanced Study in Learning and Teaching (CASLAT) from Imperial.
With a background in Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering (BEng/MEng, La Salle – Universitat Ramon Llull), Castells graduated top of his class in 1999 before shifting his focus to the music industry, completing an MA in Music Business Management at the University of Westminster. His academic journey has led him back to science in the form of a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where he is researching the effect of rhythmic auditory stimulation on heart rate variability (HRV) to mitigate chronic stress.
Alongside his academic work, Castells has built a distinctive musical voice, combining classical composition techniques with cinematic electronics and sound design. His music has been described as "Morricone meets Satie" (Michael Haas) and "Puccini meets Sigur Rós" (Magnatune), and has been performed internationally in venues ranging from concert halls to immersive installations. His projects often explore themes of inner transformation, coherence, and healing, and he is particularly interested in the role of music in psychedelic therapy and consciousness studies.
Castells’ work has spanned collaborations with artists across disciplines and continents. His compositions have featured in film, broadcast, and multimedia works, and he has developed immersive sound environments that integrate technology, ritual, and spatial design to offer transformative experiences.
Born in Barcelona and based in London, Castells continues to explore the intersection of art and science, using music as a vehicle for inquiry, emotional engagement, and human connection.
