Dr Stuart Bowyer's research treats data and AI in healthcare as clinical interventions: things that should be designed, evaluated and monitored like a therapy rather than shipped like a product.

The difficulty is that these interventions do not hold still. The intervention is never the model alone, but the model together with the clinician, the workflow, and the mechanism that updates it, and all of these change as clinical recording practice and data sources change. His work develops the methods needed to deploy such interventions in real services and to establish whether they improve care.

He works with routine clinical data at scale, principally electronic health records, across surgical and medical specialties, and with clinical teams at major UK centres. He has built clinical data platforms inside hospital secure data environments, taken medical devices through regulatory approval, and co-founded three spin-outs. Alongside his research he contributes to interdisciplinary teaching in surgical data science and healthcare data science.
