BIO

After qualifying in medicine from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 1991, Shamini completed specialist training in general practice in the North East of England. Between 1995 and 1996, she worked as a GP in London before serving as a medic with VSO in Tanzania. This experience sparked her interest in public health, leading her to complete specialist training in public health medicine in London in 2003.

As a consultant in public health medicine, Shamini has worked across primary care organisations and health authorities, managing a broad portfolio that includes healthcare commissioning, quality improvement of services, establishment of stop smoking programmes, and evaluation of screening initiatives.

Since joining Imperial College London in 2006, she has held various leadership roles, including Joint Medical Director for Partnership for Health—a collaboration that established urgent care centres and a GP practice at Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals.

Her research focuses on mental health, health inequalities, and health systems. Internationally, she has developed a distance learning Master’s in Public Health programme in partnership with the Open University of Mauritius and collaborated with partners in Bangladesh to improve mental healthcare access.

Currently, Shamini is the public mental health lead for Imperial’s NIHR School of Public Health [https://sphr.nihr.ac.uk/] and she currently co-leads the mental health specialty initiative within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for North West London.[https://www.arc-nwl.nihr.ac.uk/research/multimorbidity-and-mental-health/arc-outreach-alliance]
