My main research interest are neuroimmunology and neuropathology to better understand the immunopathological mechanisms involved in chronic inflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS). In particular, my main focus is to define the exact cell and molecular mechanisms, together with the correspondent molecular profile, of chronic inflammation in MS both in inflammatory niches, such as leptomeninges, perivascular spaces and choroid plexus, and in the cerebrospinal fluid. This with the ultimate goal to identify the exact inflammatory-driven mechanisms of neuro-axonal damage occurring in the cortical grey matter of MS patients and contributing to disease accumulation.
One of my main neuroimmunology interest is the key role of B cells and their functions in chronic inflammatory diseases.
In addition, among the possible mechanisms driving aberrant B cell immunity in MS, I am also interested to further understand the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and, in particular, to define the exact molecular signature of EBV-infected B cells in MS brains
