RESEARCH
I currently lead a range of research studies in paediatric critical care as Chief Investigator and Co-Investigator. Major funders are the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), Action Medical Research, BMA Foundation and Rosetrees Trust.
- PATCH, an NIHR Research Professorship aiming to develop personalised ventilation approaches in children (NIHR306356)
- BACHb, a two-stratum NIHR-funded clinical trial of respiratory support in infants with bronchiolitis (NIHR152262)
- PIVOTAL Platform trial, first PICU platform trial with three domains: fluid management, sedation and blood transfusion targets (NIHR164012)
- REMAP-CAP Influenza, UK national platform trial evaluating treatments for patients hospitalised due to influenza (NIHR155209)
- OPTICAL, a mixed methods study of transition from paediatric to adult critical care (NIHR156314)
- EVITA, an RCT comparing intravenous bronchodilators in acutely ill children with asthma (NIHR162027)
- BRANCH, developing a breath test to distinguish bacterial from viral chest infections in ventilated children (Action Medical)
- Paediatric AI Clinician, to develop AI models for sepsis and ventilation management in children (Rosetrees Trust)
Previously, I led/co-led several NIHR-funded studies:
- DEPICT (mixed methods study of the impact of timely access to intensive care for children): DEPICT was the largest ever study conducted in paediatric critical care transport. Findings influenced national quality standards for the care of critically ill children.
- FIRST-ABC master protocol (noninvasive respiratory support in critically ill children): The two FIRST ABC clinical trials were the largest clinical trials ever conducted in paediatric noninvasive respiratory support, and influenced international guidelines.
- CATCH (comparison of impregnated central venous catheters with standard catheters)
- Oxy-PICU (conservative versus liberal oxygen saturation targets)
- PRESSURE (permissive blood pressure target versus standard care)
