BIO
Mr-Prof. Marco Moscarelli, MD, MRes, PhD, is a consultant cardiac surgeon and senior scientific researcher at GVM Care & Research in Palermo, Italy.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, in 2001, where he also completed his residency in cardiac surgery in 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he trained as a clinical and research fellow at Hammersmith Hospital/NHLI and completed an MRes in ischemic remote preconditioning (RIPC) in collaboration with the University of Bristol. In 2016, he returned to Italy and joined GVM Care & Research—one of Europe’s largest providers of cardiac surgery—with the aim of establishing a multi-centric research network. He subsequently earned a PhD from Maastricht University with a thesis focused on Advancements in Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery.
Prof. Moscarelli has a special interest in catheter-based procedures and serves as a certified proctor for Abbott’s transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) program. His group has led and published multiple clinical trials and translational studies in the fields of minimally invasive surgery, structural heart interventions, and evidence synthesis.
He is Honorary Lecturer at both Imperial College London and the University of Bristol. Since 2019, he has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiac Surgery and sits on the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EJCTS), where he also acts as a statistical consultant.
He has authored over 150 articles in peer-reviewed international journals.
