RESEARCH

Pepe’s research focuses on urban water systems and sustainability transitions, with a particular emphasis on how cities can enable, govern, and scale innovation in complex, multi-actor environments.

His work applies systems thinking and participatory approaches to examine interactions between governance, infrastructure, planning, and innovation ecosystems in cities facing water scarcity, climate risk, and rapid urbanisation. A core aim of his research is to move beyond siloed technical solutions and support integrated, system-level decision-making for urban water resilience.

Current research themes include:

  • Urban water innovation ecosystems and enabling environments
  • Systems thinking and system dynamics applied to urban sustainability
  • Water neutrality and integrated planning across urban scales
  • Governance and policy design for sustainability transitions
  • Participatory and collaborative decision-support approaches
  • Blue–green infrastructure and nature-based solutions in cities

This research underpins the development of applied frameworks and tools to support cities, institutions, and practitioners in translating complex systems insights into strategic action.
