TEACHING INTERESTS

I am the Co-lead of the Core and Advanced modules in the New Horizons in Pharmacology stream of the MSc Genes, Drugs and Stem Cells - Novel Therapies.

The Core Module is held in the first term (November-December) of the academic year. It covers the history of pharmacology; drugs in our lives and in society; current and emerging new pharmacological approaches; the drug development process from pre-clinical studies to clinical trials; ethical issues in pharmacology, such as precision medicine and the 'postcode lottery'; commercial exploitation of drugs; intellectual property; markets and competition; funding sources; choices of commercialisation strategies.

The Advanced Module is held in the second term (January-March) of the academic year. The students study how traditional and emerging technologies are used to treat human diseases. We critically appraise and synthesise data about these conditions and their treatments. Also, students adopt a horizon-scanning approach to identify the very latest innovations in pharmacology, which they will showcase in a mock funding application.
