RESEARCH

Francesco's research at Imperial is centered on bioinformatics approaches to understand the genetic architecture of cardiomyopathies and other cardiovascular diseases. More specifically, his current research is focused on understanding the contribution of rare genetic variants to disease liability and on their integration into polygenic risk scores. At his home institution (University of Brescia, Italy) he works primarily into the genetics of schizophrenia.

In 2026, he was funded with 1 million Euros from Fondazione Regionale per la Ricerca Biomedica (frrb.it) to implement a 3-year project focused on missing heritability in schizophrenia, investigated by means of long-read sequencing and pangenomic approaches. Since 2024, he collaborates closely with the Cambridge Centre for Precision Psychiatry and Data Science at the University of Cambridge (cppds.org.uk), where he is a visiting researcher.
