BIO

Dr Eduardo M. Normando is a clinician scientist, Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Western Eye and Charing Cross Hospitals. He is a member of the Imperial College Ophthalmic Research Group (ICORG) Clinical Trials Unit where he is Chief investigator in several investigator-lead Clinical Trials.

Dr Normando is passionate about education as he believes teaching is an integral part of the success of an academic institution. He holds a PGCert in University learning and teaching and he is Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has major roles in training and education being the undergraduate lead for ophthalmology at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is the Assessment lead for the BSc in Surgical Design, Technology and Innovation at Imperial College. He is also personal tutor for year 1 and year 2 BSc. Medical Biosciences.

His research is focused mainly on innovative non-invasive retinal imaging techniques and their applications in assessing novel therapeutic strategies for ophthalmic and neurodegenerative diseases.

His most recent research, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has been on the application of an autonomous Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbot to detect post-operative cataract surgery patients who require further assessment.

Other aspect of his research includes there use of AI to predict the progression of Glaucoma.This new test can detect glaucoma progression 18 months earlier than the current gold standard method.

He is also involved in new application of Optical Coherence Tomography with funding form Heidelberg Engineering and Zeiss Meditech.

Dr Normando clinical interest is in glaucoma, ophthalmic emergencies and general ophthalmology. His expertise in on early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma with medications and laser.

He is the Clinical Lead for the Ophthalmology Outpatient at Charing Cross Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust where he has set up a new high throughput diagnostic clinic which provides better patient flow across all satellite sites.

Der Normando is member of the board of the Royal Society of Medicine Ophthalmology Section. He is secretary of the glaucoma section for the European Association for Vision and Eye Research. He is also member of a number of internationally recognised medical societies

Undergraduate teaching
Ophthalmology Firm Lead for the College and the Trust: I have been managing and organising the undergraduate teaching in Ophthalmology in collaboration with colleagues from different departments within the Faculty of Medicine across different tears and phases. In particular, I have been instrumental in several innovative education activities such as the reorganization of

For year 1 (ex year 2), I have reorganised the practical teaching in ophthalmology which has been used as a pilot to be applied to other subspecialties. Specifically, I have redesigned the learning objectives of the lectures in order to reflect the outcomes of the practical sessions. For the practical session I have also managed to increase the numbers of demonstrators to yield a low student/demonstrator ratio. The impact of this teaching can be measured by the excellent feedback received and by the increasing interest of the students in participating in research projects and clinical audits.

As part of the College response to the COVID Pandemic, I have organised and delivered Guided online learning (GOL) and Live online learning (LOL) with the respective relevant learning objectives.

For year 3, in collaboration with the year lead, I have produced learning videos aiming to illustrate the most commonly performed ophthalmic diagnostic procedures for systemic conditions with ophthalmic manifestations. In line with such videos, I have also written a short ophthalmoscopy handout with clinical cases and their ophthalmoscopic manifestations. This handout has been developed with Year-5 students in mind as a bridge between Year-3 DOCS and Year-6 clinical placement.

As the Assessment Lead/lecturer of the Year-4 BSc in Surgical Design, Technology and Innovation at Imperial College, I have introduced sessions on systematic reviews, Cochrane collaboration, peer-to-peer study designs sessions and introductory lectures to ethics in clinical research.

For year 6, I have organised the student’s clinical attachment week. One of my first objects was to standardise student exposure and learning objectives across the different participating NHS trusts. Student’s feedback was taken in consideration and a new joint strategy has been used since.

As part of the College response to the COVID Pandemic, I have organised and delivered an interactive remote session on Ocular Emergencies.

As part of the new curriculum review, in collaboration with the year-6 lead I am reorganising the student’s clinical attachment in ophthalmology aiming for each student to attend at least one Ophthalmic Accident & Emergency session at the WEH which I believe is an invaluable experience for any medical student.

As keen mentor, I am also involved in formal supervision and pastoral care of intercalated BSc students attending the WEH for their projects.

I am also Personal tutor for year 1 and year 2 BSc in Medical Biosciences.

I have also been part of the team responsible for designing and delivering the first Student Selective Component (SSC) in Ophthalmology at UCL. The impact of this course can be measured by the number of medical students who have subsequently decided to continue their career in ophthalmology.

2015 – current: Trainees mentorship: I have been mentoring junior ophthalmic trainees in their preparation for national meetings and prizes. The impact of this mentorship can be measured by the fact that 4 of my trainees have won the 1st prize ether for the best research project or the best Audit project in the last 3 years.
