BIO
Greetings and salutations!
About me
I work at the intersection of digital health, artificial intelligence, and clinical reality. For reasons that remain unclear even to me, I have spent my career insisting that technology must actually work in practice . . . not just in PowerPoint presentations, conference abstracts, or committee reports.
I currently serve as Professor of Digital Health and Clinical Artificial Intelligence at Newcastle University, and as a Visiting Professor at Imperial College London, returning periodically to contribute, disrupt, and build things that endure.
Career and roles
My work has involved founding and scaling research labs, developing clinical systems, and occasionally rescuing programmes perilously close to being declared “strategic” (which is often code for “overdue and expensive”).
Highlights include:
- Founding the DEPTH AI Lab: building clinical AI tools that translate into practice rather than remaining elegant spreadsheets
- Establishing Gnosis Health, taking an idea developed during my doctoral work into funded implementation
- Leading major national programmes focused on patient-facing AI, remote monitoring, and decision support
- Working with NHS organisations to modernise systems, sometimes gently, sometimes less gently
I have also collaborated with industry, policy groups, funders, and clinical teams who all share a certain restlessness with slow progress.
Outside of work
When not building technology, I run, usually further than planned. I also read, occasionally think, and travel to places with a coastline and good light.
There is, in my view, something irreplaceable about distance: whether measured in kilometres, in time, or in perspective.
