BIO
Mr Espeed Khoshbin is an experienced consultant in cardiac surgery, transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals. He is an honorary clinical senior lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, London and an academic tutor at Imperial School of Medicine. He is the NHS BT lead for organ utilisation at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals and on the national selection committee for cardiothoracic surgery at NHS Eng.
He qualified from Aberdeen Medical School with an MB ChB and achieved a post graduate research doctorate (MD) from the University of Leicester. He began his training in cardiac surgery at St Marys Hospital in London as part of east Thames rotation. As a national trainee in cardiac surgery, he achieved fellowship of The Surgical Royal Colleges of Great Britain and Ireland (FRCS CTh) and was appointed to the UK’s prestigious National Peri-CCT Fellowship in cardiothoracic transplantation. He was awarded a travelling scholarship through the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation to the University College Los Angeles (UCLA), California.
Mr Khoshbin performs a variety of major cardiac operations. He is highly specialised in surgical therapy for heart and lung failure through transplantation, ventricular assist device technologies and complex explantation of ventricular assist devices pre heart transplantation. He has several publications and has delivered numerous national and international lectures in this subject.
He is on the national Speciality Advisory Committee (SAC) as a lead for transplantation and mechanical circulatory support (MCS), national lead for heart and lung transplant and MCS education, and an examiner for the board of examiners at the European and UK cardiac surgery. He directs several national and international courses in transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
Mr Khoshbin has an active research profile. His special interest is in heart failure therapy through mechanical circulatory support. He has a research doctorate in mechanical circulatory support and related laboratory research. He developed the first Rabit model for systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) over 20 years ago and its therapy using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). His work has influenced the wider use of ECMO since. He has been a lead investigator in randomised controlled trials in cardiac surgery. He is interested in surgical innovation and innovation in surgical education. He conducted the first in human innovative use of exo-skeleton for transplantation.
Mr Khoshbin has published extensively in peer review medical journals, including Cochran systematic reviews, book chapters, randomised trials, and meta-analysis of trials. He has published in journals such as the British Medical Journal, Circulation Research, Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Annals of Cardiothoracic Surgery, European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He is an expert reviewer for the National Institute for Health and Care Research and several high impact factor journals. He is an advisor to the general medical council (GMC) for certification and national institute of healthcare excellence NICE for mechanical circulatory supports.
