RESEARCH
My research focuses on dynamic stability and control of electric power grids with high shares of inverter-based resources (IBRs) such as wind farms, solar PV parks, grid-scale battery energy storage systems and HVDC links. The goal is to equip grid operators with methods and tools to foresee, analyse and mitigate emerging grid stability threats such as IBR-induced sub-synchronous oscillations (SSO). This is meant to facilitate a rapid transition to a low-carbon electricity grid without compromising grid security or incurring costs by over-constraining renewables.
Key focus areas include:
- Modelling adequacy of IBR-dominated grids for emerging stability problems
- Robust IBR connection compliance framework to ensure grid stability
- Compliance-aware design of IBR control
- Digital twin for IBR-dominated grids that tracks evolving grid conditions
- Early warning on incipient stability problems
- Characterising grid strength as a proxy of stability problems
- Analysing adverse interaction among IBRs
- Locating root cause of IBR-induced instabilities
My current research is supported by UKRI through the EPICS Global Centre, National Electricity System Operator (NESO) and GE Vernova. I work closely with Prof David Angeli, Prof Janusz Bialek, Prof Mark O'Malley and Prof Tim Green within our Control and Power research group.
My earlier work explored power oscillation damping, stability and control of AC-HVDC systems, and demand response through voltage-sensitive loads.
