DrArul Ramasamy

Arul is a fellowship trained Consultant Foot and Ankle Surgeon within the Defence Medical Services. He read Medicine at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, and graduated in 2000. After graduation, Arul joined the Army and has deployed as a medical officer throughout the world including Iraq and Afghanistan. Having finished his Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Birmingham, he completed specialist foot and ankle fellowships at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford and the Fortius Clinic, London. He was also awarded the prestigious ABC Travelling Fellowship by the British Orthopaedic Association in 2018.

Arul joined Imperial College London for a PhD in Biomechanics in 2009 and successfully defended his PhD in 2012. His thesis was related to lower limb blast injuries from under vehicle explosions. He has published extensively, with over 100 peer reviewed papers and book chapters. He has received over £6m in grant funding related to combat injury management. He continues to supervise multiple PhD students on fracture healing and rehabilitation.

Arul was appointed as the Defence Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2023 and is a visiting Professor and Clinical Lead at the Centre for Injury Studies at Imperial.
