ProfessorArnab Majumdar

Prof Arnab Majumdar is the Professor of Transport Risk and Safety and the Director of the Transport Risk Management Centre (TRMC) at the Centre for Transport Engineering and Modelling (CTEM), Imperial College London. He is the Deputy Director (Research in Practice) of the ESRC London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP), involving the Universities of Kings College London, Queen Mary and Westfield and Imperial College London..He is also a Chartered Engineer. In 2024 he was appointed the Chair of British Standards Committee ACE/58 – Environmental and operating conditions for aircraft equipment and since 2025 a Trustee of the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Transport Safety (PACTS).. Finally he is a Visiting Professor at Taipei Medical University.

His PhD was completed in 2003 at Imperial College on the Estimation of Airspace Capacity in Europe. He also has MSc. degrees in Transport from Imperial College and Cognitive Neuropsychology from University College London.

He has over 30 years research and teaching experience in risk and safety in transport, in particular air transport, and on the science of crowd behaviour. Of particular interest are human performance related aspects of operators, in particular workload, fatigue, errors and complexity issues they face. In recent years his research has focused on the human and social factors associated with human behaviour when there is a threat to life, e.g. during a knife attack, fire and toxic substances. To do this he has used mixed methods research, including a combination of experimental methods including virtual reality and wearable technologies. 

Prof Majumdar has published over 175 peer-reviewed Journal papers, over 130 Conference papers and three book chapters. He has been a Member of three international aviation research committees and received numerous awards, including a Best Paper award in Airspace Management at the 6th USA/Europe ATM 2005 R&D Seminar and the Written Paper Prize Silver Award for the best papers published in The Aeronautical Journal in 2019. 

In conducting his research, he has worked closely with several organisations both nationally, e.g. United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Abellio, easyJet, and internationally, e.g. Transport Canada, SINTEF (Norway) SESAR JU, Northen Territory Health and the Dutch State Railways.

Prof Majumdar has successfully supervised 30 PhD students. He currently leads a ten person team of doctoral students at the TRMC covering a broad spectrum of research assessing human and social factors in risk safety of safety critical systems, including human behaviour during evacuation from emergencies using mixed reality experimental techniques. He has won over £2.5 million in research funding from the Lloyds Register Foundation, the UKRI and the European Union.

In addition to research and doctoral supervision, he lectures on modules relating to transport safety and risk; air transportation, the science of crowds and highways engineering.

He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Highway Engineers.
