BIO
Professor Zachary Whinnett is a Consultant Cardiologist practicing at Imperial College NHS Trust, working principally at Hammersmith and St Mary's Hospitals. His specialist areas of expertise are pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac electrophysiology (treatment of heart rhythm disorders). He is internationally recognised as a leader in the field of implantable cardiac devices and is frequently invited to present at international scientific meetings.
He leads a research program in implantable cardiac devices. This work includes high precision physiological studies providing insights into mechanisms of action, as well as testing and developing new methods for delivering pacing therapy. He is chief investigator for several large multi-centre randomised control trials, in conduction system pacing.
Professor Whinnett’s group has a strong track record in innovation, which includes the development of a high precision method for haemodynamic assessment of pacing interventions. They have also developed a novel method for Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators to assess haemodynamic status, the aim of this method is to make ICD's safer and more effective.
He has a track record of obtaining competitive research funding and has published extensively in leading scientific journals.
Prof Whinnett is the head of Cardiovascular Trials and Epidemiology Section at the National Heart and Lung Institute and is the director of the Peart Rose Research Unit.
He has a strong track record of teaching which includes supervising multiple PhD students and training Cardiologists from around the world in advanced pacing techniques.
