BIO

Dr. Yiannis Moustakis is a hydrologist, specializing in Earth system modeling, terrestrial ecosystems, and hydroclimatic variability. By combining state-of-the-art Earth System Models and higher-resolution Terrestrial Biosphere Models, he aims to understand how we can design and deploy sustainable mitigation pathways for the future, and how terrestrial ecosystems and the water and carbon cycle respond to climate change and/or land-use and land cover change. 

 

His research includes:

Carbon Dioxide Removal in the Earth system: Dr. Moustakis explores the large-scale deployment of land- and ocean-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) methods such as Afforestation/Reforestation, Agroforestry, Bioenergy Crops with Carbon Capture and Storage, and Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement on the Earth System and its impacts on the water-carbon-food-biodiversity nexus regionally and globally. To do so, he employs state-of-the-art Earth System Models and hyper-resolution Terrestrial Biosphere Models. 


Hydroclimatic variability and terrestrial ecosystems: Dr. Moustakis investigates different aspects of hydroclimatic variability including heat and rainfall extremes. He is particularly interested in how climatic extremes depend on land-atmosphere interactions and how these are projected to change under anthropogenic pressures, including both climate change, and changes in land use and land cover. Dr. Moustakis also investigates and models how ecosystems respond to and cope with changing hydroclimatic variability.

Meeting the Paris Agreement climate targets will require the large-scale deployment of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) methods, including afforestation/reforestation, agroforestry, and bioenergy crops with carbon capture and storage. Join us to explore explore the effects of CDR and its impacts on the integrated water-carbon-food-biodiversity nexus using state-of-the-art climate and hyper-resolution terrestrial biosphere models.
