Yongyun Hwang is a Professor of Fluid Mechanics in the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London. He obtained his BS and MS degrees from Seoul National University (South Korea) and completed his PhD in 2010 at the Hydrodynamics Laboratory (LadHyX), École Polytechnique. Following his doctoral studies, he remained at LadHyX as a postdoctoral researcher before moving in 2012 to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge as a Marie Curie Research Fellow. He joined Imperial College London in October 2013, where he leads a research group in theoretical and computational fluid dynamics.

His research interests lie broadly in fluid mechanics, with particular emphasis on:

• Instabilities, transition, and turbulence
• Nonlinear dynamics and pattern formations
• Biological fluid mechanics
• Deterministic and probabilistic low-dimensional modelling
• Optimisation in fluid systems
• Scientific computing (direct and large-eddy simulations)

His work integrates hydrodynamic stability theory, dynamical systems, modern applied mathematics, variational methods, and optimisation, with a focus on developing physically interpretable and mathematically grounded representations of complex fluid flows.
