BIO

My academic background is in Human Geography, focusing on immigrant life dynamics in London and the UK, particularly within the Brazilian community. This research, spanning about two decades, explored various aspects of Brazilian migration, including social differentiation, cultural identity, and migrant challenges.

In recent years, my research interests has shifted towards biofuels, bioproducts, and the broader bioeconomy. I have ve been involved in EU-funded research projects under Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe frameworks, which have developed innovative bio-refinery technologies and processes. My work centers on examining social sustainability aspects and policy analysis.

This research has deepened my understanding of sustainability's complex nature. I've found that the environmental sustainability of biofuels is not straightforward and requires comprehensive assessment. While biofuels can potentially reduce GHG emissions compared to fossil fuels, their production and use can lead to other environmental concerns such as land use change, impacts on biodiversity, and water resource degradation, and attendant social impacts (e.g. loss of access to resources, damaged resources).

My research has emphasised the crucial importance of considering socio-economic factors in sustainability assessments. A significant insight is the interconnected nature of sustainability issues, highlighting that biofuels are part of wider socio-economic systems (energy, agriculture, forestry). Furthermore, sustainability aspects of biofuels change across different scales and over time, adding to the complexity of assessment. Also, my work has underscored the critical role of policy in promoting sustainable technologies and practices, re-affirming the need for policymakers and key stakeholders to consider and address trade-offs between environmental, economic, and social sustainability aspects.

Overall, my research has reinforced the need for a holistic approach to examining the sustainability in the bioeconomy. This requires understanding social, economic, and policy challenges, not just environmental and technological dimensions. Considering equity and justice regarding local community involvement and distributional effects is integral to this approach.
