BIO
William Scott is a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Career Development Fellow at Imperial College London and investigator at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences. He is also an Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
Research:
He studies the aetiology and pathogenesis of obesity and type 2 diabetes, global health challenges with limited treatment options. Major research interests include the role of epigenetics in human obesity and diabetes susceptibility, how pathological adipose tissue remodeling impairs metabolic health, and why weight loss leads to remission of diabetes.
Approaches:
To study these areas, he combines high-throughput molecular screens (DNA/RNA sequencing, proteomics, single cell and spatial genomics), multidimensional data analysis, detailed functional characterisation and therapeutic manipulation in humans and experimental models.
Biosketch:
He studied Biomedical Sciences (Cellular & Molecular Biology) and Medicine at the University of Birmingham (1999-2005). He did a PhD in Human Genetics at Imperial College London supported by an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship (2013-2017). He was awarded a Chain Florey Clinical Lectureship at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences in 2018, and a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Career Development (Intermediate Clinician Scientist) Fellowship in 2020 to start his own research group.
