TEACHING INTERESTS

I am currently a Teaching Fellow in the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication, and an artist and practice-based researcher. I lead the Practical Art course on the Imperial Horizons programme, teaching observational drawing to undergraduates in science, engineering, business and medicine as a form of perceptual and cognitive training. My classes move from technique to concept: students develop observational skills by looking closely at historical works of art and the natural world, then apply them in conceptual projects informed by contemporary art practice.

Alongside this, I supervise and mark master's theses on the MSc SRST programme, focusing on projects in airspace and air traffic control. This area connects with my own doctoral research on aeromobilities and the experience of airspace.  On Horizons Bespoke, I supervise independent essays by undergraduates from across the sciences, engineering and medicine, guiding them as they bring their disciplinary knowledge into dialogue with art and visual culture.

I have more than 25 years' experience teaching fine art, drawing and critical studies in the UK, New Zealand and China. I  was previously Lecturer in Fine Art  at Goldsmiths, University of London and Postgraduate Supervisor in Media Arts at Wintec, New Zealand and  at Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland. I hold a practice-based PhD in Fine Art from Goldsmiths. My research explores culture/nature relations, aeromobilities and the art–science interface through drawing, sound, moving image and writing.
