DrVasileios Angelidakis

Assistant Professor in Geotechnical Engineering

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering - Faculty of Engineering

BIO

Vasileios is an Assistant Professor in Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. He holds a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Newcastle University and an MSc and an MEng in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens. His research focuses on particulate micromechanics, exploring the micro-to-macro behaviour of granular systems through numerical modelling and digital imaging.

He previously held the post of Lecturer in Geotechnics at Queen’s University Belfast, where he contributed to geotechnical research and teaching. As manager of the Geotechnics Laboratory at Queen's, he coordinated the modernisation of its facilities and working practices to enhance experimental research and student learning. Before joining Queen’s, he held a position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Granular Metamaterials at the Institute for Multiscale Simulation at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Prior to this, he held a postdoctoral research position as Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Particle Imaging at Newcastle University, where he worked on the design of OCULAR, a prototype instrument for three-dimensional dynamic image analysis and of particles. He is one of the founding directors of Ocular Systems Ltd, a spinout company commercialising this technology.

Vasileios is a strong advocate of open-source software development. He authored SHAPE, a tool for three-dimensional particle shape characterisation, and CLUMP, a tool for generating multi-sphere particles, and is one of the active developers of YADE, a well established open-source modelling platform applying the Discrete Element Method (DEM).
