RESEARCH

Tom’s team research novel ways to improve the performance of sliding interfaces. This requires the development of new measurement techniques used in combination with mathematical modelling. The techniques he has developed include i) infrared microscopy to study contact temperatures, ii) ultrasonic reflection and acoustic emission to monitor interfaces in industrial components, iii) fluorescence microscopy to image lubricant behaviour, and iv) electron and plasma mapping to view triboemission. The practical outputs of his research include a) applying laser surface texturing to improve efficiency for Ford and Volvo Trucks, b) controlling automotive noise for Bosch, c), optimising seal performance for Toyota and Afton Chemical, d) understanding lubrication mechanisms in cold rolling for TATA Steel, e) investigating flavour perception for PepsiCo and Motif FoodWorks.
