BIO
My academic and research background is primarily focused on environmental engineering, specializing in bioelectrochemical process design for energy and environmental applications. I have actively pursued opportunities for collaboration, training, and communication to establish myself as a prominent researcher in the field of bioelectrochemistry. Throughout my research journey, I have achieved significant milestones, including impactful publications, prestigious fellowships such as Marie Curie and Brain Pool, and participation in innovative projects like the Creative Challenge Project of Korea and Korea-India joint projects on bioenergy recovery from various wastes. During my Ph.D. and postdoc research, I also contributed to laboratory development and initiated pioneering research directions. Additionally, I gained valuable experience by co-supervising master's and Ph.D. students from diverse cultural backgrounds, further enhancing my skills in knowledge sharing and mentoring.
Doctoral studies
I earned my Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India, where I focused on developing novel catalyst materials for Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) to enhance interfacial biochemical reactions to achieve efficient wastewater treatment and energy recovery. These efforts resulted in successful pilot-scale MFC operations with practical applications and positively impacted the academic and professional growth of numerous master's and Ph.D. students. I received the 2018 Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award from the President of India in recognition of my research achievements during my Ph.D.
Postdoctoral studies
During my postdoctoral research, I focused on designing bioelectrochemical reactors and electrode materials for wastewater treatment and energy recovery. In my first Marie Curie Fellowship at the University of Alcala, Spain, I developed strategies to induce randomized mutation in pure culture Geobacter spp, enhancing their tolerance to high Cr (VI) toxicity. This modified microbial strain was valuable for use as an anodic inoculum in bioelectrochemical systems, which efficiently treated tannery wastewater and facilitated high bioenergy recovery. These research findings also provided me with opportunities to engage with policymakers and prominent researchers at the 2018 European Green Deal cluster event. As a BP Fellow at Kyung Hee University, South Korea, I investigated microbe-electrode interactions on biocatalyst surfaces, including metal-organic frameworks, iron-modified zeolites, and PANI-modified carbon materials and developed efficient BES systems for biohydrogen and methane production from various waste streams. During my postdoctoral appointments, I assumed leadership roles in the research group, overseeing research activities and co-supervising master's and Ph.D. students. These experiences further refined my leadership skills in preparation for my future role as an independent researcher.
