DrThomas Gassler

My research interests are to understand and engineer cross-kingdom partnerships between fungi and bacteria, and to use these associations for new applications. I aim to connect molecular and single-cell mechanisms with systems behaviour to design microbial consortia that are predictable, robust and sustainable. My background ranges from metabolic engineering of yeast to single-cell manipulation of filamentous fungi. At the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at Imperial College, I will use this expertise to establish and analyse novel solid-state fermentation systems at single-cell resolution.
