ProfessorTimothy Gant

Professor Timothy (Tim) Gant trained in Toxicology and Pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy, University College London for both undergraduate and PhD. Gant is a European Registered Toxicologist, Fellow of the British Society of Toxicology (and current President) and Member of the American Society of Toxicology. He completed postdoctoral periods and Visiting Staff Scientist positions with the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda USA (1988 to 1993) in the laboratory of Experimental Carcinogenesis. He served with further postdoctoral and career development positions with the Medical Research Council (1993 to 2002). Gant was appointed to MRC Tenure and served as group leader (2002 to 2011) with the Medical Research Council before moving to work with the Health Protection Agency (2011) which became Public Health England (PHE) in 2013 and the UK Health Security (UKHSA) in 2021. In UK HSA Gant leads the Toxicology Department with interests in the translation of science to policy and regulation, the development of non-animal methods (NAM) for toxicological hazard assessment, the prevention of disease (public health) and use of science in government.

• ·    Co-ordinator for the Open University UKHSA Affiliated Research Centre which accredits UKHSA to train to PhD level.
• ·    Co-Editor Toxicology Letters the journal of the European Society of Toxicology.
• ·    Member OECD Emerging Science for Chemicals Assessment Committee and the Chemicals and Biotechnology Committee
• ·    Member of the Scientific Advisory board of the European Centre for the Toxicology and Ecotoxicology of Chemicals (ECETOC)

Key Research Interests:

• ·    Regulatory toxicology for chemicals in all areas of use, and particularly the development of non-animal methods for the assessment of Hazard.
• ·    Application of genomic methods in Toxicology and Hazard Identification.
