    Thomas Cass is Professor of Mathematics at Imperial College London. At Imperial, he directs the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in the Mathematics of Random Systems, a jointly-run project with the University of Oxford, which trains the next generation of inter-disciplinary researchers in probabilistic modelling and algorithms. He is also a member of the Leadership Team for DataSig I, a six-year EPSRC Programme Grant (2019-2025) in the UK that develops mathematical and computational tools for multi-modal data. His team have pioneered the use of high order signature methods from rough path theory as a new approach in mathematical data science. In March 2025, he and his team were awarded another large EPSRC Programme Grant, beginning in October 2025, to advance these foundations. DataSig II will develop the mathematical and computational infrastructure for streamed data using rough analysis in the era of Large Language Models (LLMs).

    Professor Cass completed his PhD at the Statistical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in 2007. He then moved to the Mathematical Institute at University of Oxford (2008-2011), during which period he was also a Fellow and Member of the Governing Body of Christ Church, Oxford. He joined Imperial in 2011. He has been a Visiting Researcher at the Alan Turing Institute in London since 2019, and was the Erik Ellentuck Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton in the academic year 2023-24.

    Professor Cass’s research interests span pure and applied mathematics with a focus on probability, stochastic analysis, mathematical data science and mathematical finance. His research uses rough analysis and rough path theory, a major tool in the study of random systems over the past two decades. Together with his collaborators at DataSig, he has adapted rough analysis to provide a set of practical tools in contemporary machine learning and data science with applications ranging from radioastronomy to molecular biology. He has written landmark publications in rough analysis in journals such as the Annals of Mathematics and the Annals of Probability, as well as leading journals and conferences in machine learning.

    Professor Cass is an Editor at the Journal of the London Mathematical Society and the Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society. He belongs to the Editorial Board of Stochastics and Partial Differential Equations: Analysis and Computations. He has co-organised major international conferences in stochastic analysis, rough analysis as well as computational data science, including at the Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics (MFO) in 2016, 2020 and 2024, an LMS-EPSRC Durham Symposium in 2017, and at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) in 2021. He has served as an External Examiner for major degree programmes in the UK, including 'Part III Mathematics' at the University of Cambridge.

    I'm originally from Chile and grew up in front of the Pacific, in Viña del Mar. I received a B.Sc. in Mathematical Engineering and a M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from the Federico Santa María Technical University in Valparaíso. In 2008 I moved to Norway, where I got a Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2012 from the University of Bergen (with some periods away from the rain in Oslo and Trento).

    My research is an N-headed monster (not necessarily a good thing) revolving around computational mathematics, optimization and control, nonlinear PDEs, high-dimensional approximation and agent-based models across scales.     Prof. Ham's research interests centre on the development and composition of high level abstractions for scientific computation, particularly geophysical fluids. His interests span computational and computer science and include both new numerical schemes and novel approaches to their implementation.

    Prof. Ham's most recent work is on differentiable abstractions for the generation of finite element models. He leads the Firedrake project and is an author of the dolfin-adjoint automated inverse simulation framework. The latter work was awarded the 2015 Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software.

    Rama Cont is Professor of Mathematics and Chair of Mathematical Finance at the University of Oxford and Director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Mathematics of Random Systems.

    Rama Cont's research focuses on stochastic analysis, stochastic processes and mathematical modeling in finance, in particular the modeling of extreme market risks, liquidity risk and systemic risk and pathwise approaches in stochastic analysis. He has co-authored more than 80 research publications, including the widely cited monograph Financial Modelling with Jump Processes (2003).

    He was the founding director of the Columbia Centre for Financial Engineering and founding director of the CFM-Imperial Institute of Quantitative Finance from 2014 to 2018.

    Prof. Cont was awarded the Louis Bachelier Prize by the French Academy of Sciences in 2010 for his research on mathematical modeling in finance and the Royal Society Award for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Research in 2017 for his work on systemic risk modelling. He was elected Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) in 2017 for his 'contributions to stochastic analysis and mathematical modeling in finance.'

    Yufei is an associate professor in Mathematical Finance and Machine Learning at the Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London.     My research in numerical analysis and scientific computing focusses on the design, analysis and implementation of numerical methods for weather forecasting, ocean modelling and climate simulation. Recently, I have been developing compatible finite element methods and time parallel algorithms for these and other applications. I am motivated by the geometric variational structure of fluid equations, which are also relevant for algorithms for exploring the geometric structure of shapes and images. I also develop numerical algorithms for probabilistic forecasting and data assimilation, and am currently developing particle filters for stochastic partial differential equations.

    I am a Lecturer in the Biomathematics group at the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London.

    My research focuses on developing mathematical and computational approaches to study biological systems. Research questions are inspired by experimental data, with the general aims of (1) formulating predictive models that provide insights into underlying mechanisms, and (2) developing mathematical and computational theories to understand functional aspects of the studied system.

    Previously, I was a postdoctoral fellow at DAMTP and the Gurdon Institute at the University of Cambridge. I obtained my PhD from the Weizmann Institute of Science.

    Enquiries from prospective PhD students are welcome. Most of the research projects span multiple disciplines and I am happy to consider candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds. I am particularly keen to hear from students interested in pursuing multidisciplinary projects at the interface of developmental biology and applied mathematics.

    My primary role currently lies with the University of Warwick, currently as Associate Professor (Reader) in the Warwick Mathematics Institute after Assistant and Associate Professor roles since September 2019. Prior to my current appointment, I was a Hooke Research Fellow in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford (2017-2019), where I am still active as OCIAM Visiting Fellow.

    In the following years I will continue holding an honorary affiliation with the Department of Mathematics in Imperial College London, undertaking co-supervision roles, conducting research in the areas of asymptotic methods for interfacial flows, computational fluid dynamics and industrial mathematics, as well as participating in outreach activities.

    As a post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Mathematics until July 2017, I worked as part of the Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics Section and was a member of the Fluid Dynamics and LFC-UK (Laminar Flow Control) groups, working with Prof. Demetrios T. Papageorgiou and Prof. Anatoly I. Ruban.

    My research was concentrated on the theoretical and numerical study of fluid-fluid interfaces in immiscible multi-layer flows, with a particular focus in electrohydrodynamic control in microfluidics. Past projects revolved around the control and suppression of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability via electric fields, while more recent efforts have been dedicated towards topics such as enhanced microfluidic mixing, electrohydrodynamically induced pumping and polymer self-assembly in confined geometries. Additionally, I am involved in high Reynolds number flow studies of droplet impact and water retention on solid surfaces, as well as the effect of the resulting thin liquid films on the influence of boundary-layer separation (multiple deck theory). The common core of the projects consists in the physical modelling approach, theoretical (asymptotic) exploration, followed by validation and extension to highly nonlinear regimes via direct numerical simulations (DNS). Efforts are directed towards obtaining results of practical significance in a wide range of applications, with several successful industrial partnerships built in either academic or consultancy roles.

    I am currently a Senior Research Associate in the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics, at the Universty of East Anglia, and a visiting researcher here at Imperial College London.   

     

    My journey at Imperial began in September 2018 when I started my doctoral studies under the supervision of Prof. Jonathan Mestel. I held a position as postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London from October 2022- June 2025. Whilst at Imperial, I was a member of the Fluid Dynamics group. My research focused on interfacial instabilities in multi-layer flows. I collaborated with Prof. Jonathan Mestel (Imperial) and Prof. Mark Blyth (University of East Anglia) on research centred around pipe flow for viscous fluids and ferrofluids.  I also worked with Prof. Demetrios Papageorgiou's research group, where we investigated thin-film ferrofluid flows in a nonlinear regime.

    I am a Chapman Fellow in Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics for the academic years 2025-2027, and the lecturer for Mathematical Biology module (MATH60014/70014, Term 1).

     

    I obtained my PhD in Septmeber 2025 as part of the Oxford-Imperial CDT Mathematics of Random Systems (EPSRC). My research centres on Dynamical Systems, Random Dynamical Systems, Chaos Theory, and Stochastic Processes, with a particular interest in developing mathematical tools to harness randomness within dynamical systems.

    Professor Darren Crowdy holds a Chair in Applied Mathematics and has been on the faculty of the Department of Mathematics since 1999. His interests are broad but centre on the application of methods of complex analysis to problems arising in the physical sciences, applied mathematics and mathematical physics. He has special interests in the field of fluid dynamics.

    Prof. Crowdy is currently an Established Career Fellow of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and a Wolfson Research Merit Fellow of the Royal Society.

    Prof. Crowdy has recently been a Visiting Professor at MIT, the California Institute of Technology, UC San Diego and the University of Kyoto.

    I study algebraic and geometric objects connected to mathematical physics, using tools from deformation theory and cohomology, algebraic differential operators, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. I am particularly interested in symplectic resolutions and singularities, which give rise to a vast new generalisation of the representation theory of semisimple Lie algebras. I also like log symplectic manifolds, which are mild generalisations of symplectic manifolds, which arise naturally in moduli spaces. These are all Poisson varieties, meaning they carry the mathematical structure coming from Hamiltonian mechanics. In my work I have invented new homology theories (eg Poisson-de Rham) and approaches to them, defined new nondegeneracy conditions ("holonomicity") on Poisson varieties, and applied them and other algebraic and geometric techniques to classify resolutions and deformations. I have also studied Hochschild (co)homology of algebras and orbifolds, algebraic differential operators, A-infinity and L-infinity algebras, preprojective algebras and their generalisations, and various constructions in noncommutative algebraic geometry.

    From 2008--2013, I was a five-year fellow of the American Institute of Mathematics, and I received NSF standard grants.

    Eyal Neuman is a Reader (Associate Professor) in mathematical finance and a member of the stochastic analysis research group at the Department of Mathematics, Imperial College London. He currently serving as a co-director of the MSc in Mathematics and Finance at Imperial College. Information about our program could be found in this link. His research interests are in the areas of probability, stochastic processes and mathematical finance. He is mainly working on interacting particle systems, stochastic partial differential equations and market microstructure. Previously he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester, NY. Eyal received his PhD in stochastic processes from the Technion.

    Ari Laptev is now the President of the European Mathematical Society and also the Head of Department of Mathematics Imperial College London. He received his PhD in Mathematics from Leningrad University (LU) in 1978, under the supervision of Michael Solomyak. His research interest is Spectral Theory of Differential Operators. Between 1972 - 77 and 1977- 82 he was employed as a junior researcher and as Assistant Professor at the Mathematics & Mechanics Department of LU. In 1981- 82 he held a post-doc position at the University of Stockholm and in 1982 he lost his position at LU due to his marriage to a British subject. Up until his emigration to England in 1987 he was working as a builder, constructing houses in small villages in the Novgorod district of Russia. In 1987 he was employed in Sweden, first as a lecturer at Linköping University and then from 1992 at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). In 1999 he became a professor at KTH and also a Vice Chairman of its Mathematics Department. In 1992 he was granted Swedish citizenship. A.Laptev was the President of the Swedish Mathematical Society from 2001 to 2003 and the President of the Organizing Committee of the Fourth European Congress of Mathematics in Stockholm in 2004. From January 2007 he has been employed by Imperial College London. A. Laptev has 3 children and has supervised twelve PhD students. One of his favourite activities apart from proving spectral inequalities is construction work. For his 50th birthday the members of the Mathematics Department of KTH presented him with a chain saw as a present.

    I am a second-year PhD student in mathematics supervised by Prof. Colin Cotter at Imperial College London, funded through the President's Scholarship and affiliated with the Mathematics for our Future Climate CDT. I hold an MSci degree from Imperial, where my master’s project focused on developing a parallelizable preconditioner for optimal control of wave equations under the supervision of Prof. Colin Cotter.
