MrSami Altalib

Sami is a medical doctor and public health researcher. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Khartoum in Sudan, and later completed a Master of Public Health (MPH) at Imperial College London as a Chevening Scholar, where his dissertation examined "The Association Between Deprivation, Ethnicity and Perinatal Brain Injury in Neonates Born in England, 2018–2020," a national analysis of 1.8 million neonates.

Before joining Imperial, Sami worked with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Sudan as a Health Promotion Supervisor and subsequently as an Epidemiology Supervisor, leading field data collection for a priority research project. He also designed health and nutrition interventions for refugee and internally displaced populations with Almanar Voluntary Organisation, recruiting and training 50 community health workers. He completed his clinical internship with the Federal Ministry of Health across internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and obstetrics & gynaecology, and served as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Community Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, where he taught epidemiology, occupational health and environmental health.

Sami is currently a Research Assistant in the Self-Care Academic Research Unit (SCARU) at the Department of Primary Care and Public Health, School of Public Health, where the unit's mission is "to make the absolute case for self-care".

Alongside his research, Sami serves as an Academic Tutor on the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme and marks MPH dissertations, Research Methods assignments, and Global MPH (GMPH) final projects. He received a Certificate of Outstanding Contribution for his marking of the MPH Research Portfolio module, recognising comprehensive, high-quality feedback. He also supervises undergraduate medical research projects at the University of Khartoum and has guest lectured on postgraduate public health and community medicine masters in Sudan. Sami is a Mandela Washington Fellow and a Member of the Royal Society for Public Health (MRSPH).
