DrSamantha Gallivan

Samantha Gallivan trained at Imperial College London (MBBS/BSc, 2005) and completed her Higher Surgical Training in London in 2016 (FRCS Tr. & Orth, 2015). She is currently a final year full time PhD student at Imperial. Her PhD explores how globalisation and migration shape university science work, focusing on internationally mobile Postdoctoral scientists and this work is funded by Imperial. She was previously Deputy Academic Lead, Educational Partnerships Office, Faculty of Medicine at Imperial, developing new global Medical Education partnerships and working with colleagues at our partner programme at LKCMedicine, Singapore.

Sam was awarded an M Ed in Surgical Education in 2019 from Imperial with Distinction and the Faculty of Medicine Dean's Prize for Best Performance on the programme. Her dissertation explored how experts in surgery, stone carving and sculpture use their sensory experience (including touch, sound and vision) to make judgements and adjustments while they work. The study introduced methodological innovation to medical education research by using phenomenologically informed qualitative interview methods developed first for use in the study of expert musicianship and dance. She discussed this project in her BBC Radio 4 'Four Thought' programme which was broadcast in August 2020. She previously won the Pulvertaft Presentation Prize of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Research Fellowships and Affiliations
Sam is a Harvard Macy Institute (#HMIMuseum) Fellow (2021/22) in the Arts Museum Based Health Professions Education Fellowship Program. She was previously awarded a Churchill Fellowship (2017) to visit the Narrative Medicine Division at Columbia University and the Stanford 'Medicine and the Muse' program. Sam is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London and has designed two funded workshops in the Science in Culture stream.
