Simon Walsh is a Consultant Thoracic Radiologist and NIHR Clinician Scientist at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, London. He specialises in the imaging of diffuse lung disease. His research is focused on imaging biomarker development in fibrotic lung disease using machine learning and computer vision. Simon's research has been picked up by the national media and featured in Wired Magazine. He is an advisor to the National Health Service England (NHSE) AI Award Panel.

Simon is a central reader for numerous phase III treatment trials of antifibrotic therapy, including INBUILD. Simon is a member of the ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT IPF Guideline Committee and ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis Guideline Committee.

Simon enjoys playing on Topcoder and can often be found trading sleep for deep sky astrophotography, his home observatory in southeast England. The image above, shows the landing parachute of the Perseverance rover, currently on Mars. The parachute contains a hidden message in binary code, within the white and orange gores, or triangles of fabric. It includes the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory motto, “Dare mighty things,” as well as GPS coordinates for JPL in Pasadena, California
