BIO
Shayan is a Principal Lecturer and Deputy Director of Education in the Department of Design Engineering at Imperial College London. He also leads the Contextual Design Engineering module and co-leads several other modules across both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. In addition, Shayan is a Visiting Tutor on the Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) MA/MSc programme at the Royal College of Art.
Shayan has worked on several industrial projects, such as developing technologies to intercept waste plastic in water streams, designing future devices for slurry transportation and mineral processing, machinery for medical applications, and packaging mechanisms. The objective of his work is to radically rethink the methods and address common issues encountered in current technologies, such as sorting, wear, and energy dissipation.
Prior to joining Imperial College in 2015, Shayan was a Research Associate at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, working on a SUPERGEN Marine Challenge project aimed at reducing the costs of marine renewables via advanced structural materials. His role was to explore the tribological challenges in scaling up tidal turbine blades to harness more energy.
With a background in manufacturing engineering, Shayan obtained his PhD in the tribology of bio-implants from the University of Strathclyde and his master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow, UK.
