BIO
Stelios Rigopoulos holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (1997), an MSc in Environmental Technology from UMIST (1999) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from UCL (2003). After postdoctoral research at Imperial College London, he joined the University of Manchester in 2005, while in 2010 he returned to Imperial College London where he is currently Reader in Thermofluids. He has been awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship for conducting research in “Nanoparticle Dynamics in Turbulent Reactive Flows” and is also the recipient of the 2007 Hinshelwood Prize.
Stelios' research interests include advanced theoretical and computational methods including artificial intelligence, molecular modelling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and population balance. Applications include environmental and engineering problems involving net zero energy generation, environmental fluid dynamics, aerosols and nanoparticles. Examples include machine learning models for net zero carbon fuels, contrail formation, volcanic ash clouds and nanoparticle synthesis.
PhD applications to Stelios' group are welcome on any of the above research fields. PhD projects include:
- Molecular Simulation of Nanoparticle Synthesis for Battery Materials with Artificial Intelligence Surrogate Models
- Sustainable Energy from Net-Zero Fuels: Mechanism Development via Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Artificial Intelligence Surrogate Models
- Contrails and Their Effect on Climate Change
- Volcanic Ash Dynamics and Their Aviation and Climate Effects
Stelios' group has developed CPMOD, an open-source code for formulating and solving population balance problems such as aerosol dynamics, nanoparticle synthesis, crystallisation and many others. It can be downloaded from the following link:
