BIO
I am Google DeepMind Academic Fellow and Royal Society Carear Development Fellow at Imperial College London. I earned my PhD from the University of Porto, Portugal, under the supervision of Professors Pavel Brazdil and Alipio Jorge. Before that, I obtained my MS in Computer Science from the University of Manchester, UK, and my BSc in Computer Science from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria.
In addition to my role at Imperial College London, I am a Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Computing, Bayero University, Kano. My research interests focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a particular focus on low-resource African languages.
I am deeply committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the technology field. To further this cause, I co-founded the HausaNLP research group, which aims to advance research and development in the Hausa language, one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa. Additionally, I founded the Arewa Data Science Academy, which seeks to democratize data science and AI education by providing free training in data science and machine learning to underserved students in Nigeria.
