BIO

Stephen is one of the two founders of The George Institute for Global Health at Imperial College London. He is also the joint founder of the Institute’s other research centres in Australia, China, and India. He was joint Principal Director (CEO) of The George until 2023 when he stood down after 25 years in the role. At that time, he also stood down as Chair of Global Health at Imperial.

He continues to hold appointments at The George Institute as Founding Director and at Imperial as Emeritus Professor of Global Health. He remains Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at UNSW Sydney. His prior academic appointments include James Martin Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford, and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Sydney.

Stephen is an international authority on the causes, prevention, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases and has had a long-term interest in the management of chronic and complex conditions in resource-poor settings. His work has spawned a large global clinical research program across a broad range of health issues, including cardiometabolic diseases, injury, trauma, mental health, respiratory diseases, and musculoskeletal conditions.

He also has a special interest in the role of the private sector in improving the health of economically disadvantaged communities. To this end, he has established several social enterprises with The George Institute across various sectors, including drug development, medical technology, and digital health. This has involved raising investment from venture capital and private equity funds and engaging in contract services, product out-licensing, company acquisitions, and commercial asset sales.

In addition to his Institute and university appointments, Stephen has held numerous external appointments as an advisor to governments, major charities, and life science companies worldwide. He was chair of the International Scientific Board of the UK BioBank throughout the early stages of its design and implementation.

Stephen has received numerous awards and prizes for his achievements and contributions to medical sciences and social entrepreneurship. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2017 Queen's Birthday Honours List.
