BIO
I am a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with a specific interest in hand surgery, complex extremity reconstruction and the management of major trauma. I am the Director of Major Trauma at St Mary's Hospital Major Trauma Centre and I lead the Traum@IC Research Group. I am a Visiting Professor at Anglia Ruskin University. I have a wide range of research interests with a core focus around complex trauma in both the civilian and military settings. My current research areas are: understanding of the healthcare burden of conflict; improving functional outcomes after lower limb amputation; methods to optimise health systems managing trauma; healthcare needs of UK military veterans.
I studied medicine at Trinity College, Oxford, graduating in 1994 with prizes in both medicine and surgery and a blue in boxing. I underwent surgical training in London, USA and Australia. I carried out a 3 year research fellowship in hand transplantation at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA for which I was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine by Oxford University, a Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Pulvertaft Prize by the British Society of Surgery of the Hand. The protocols I developed formed the basis for the US hand transplant programme. I have authored over 100 papers, 2 textbooks and numerous book chapters.
I have strong links to the military healthcare having been a regular and reservist in the British Army for over 20 years. I have been deployed to Afghanistan twice and has also worked with civilian organisations in other war and disaster zones, most recently in Ukraine. I spent four years as a Senior Lecturer at the Academic Department of Military Surgery and Trauma, Royal Centre for Defence Medicine conducting military research.
I am the NHS England National Specialty Adviser in Armed Forces Health. I set up and run the first veterans physical healthcare pathway in the UK, Op RESTORE (previously known as the Veterans Trauma Network). This pathway has revolutionised veterans' physical healthcare.
