BIO

Shaojun Feng is a Visiting Professor at the  Centre for Transport Engineering and Modelling within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Dr Feng has more than thirty years of research experience in navigation.

His research interests cover all aspects of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), mainly in GPS/Galileo integrity, augmentation systems, correction services, high accuracy positioning, integrated navigation systems, Assisted GNSS, software receiver, functional safety, and telematics.

Dr Feng's notable achievements include

1). The award of Michael Richey Medal by the Royal Institute of Navigation for his exceptional contributions to the GNSS integrity for safety assurance.

2). The certification by European Space Agency (ESA) for leading the development of a Galileo receiver. The significant achievement was also recognised by the UK Space Agency in a press release on 7th August 2014 titled “UK leads the way in using Galileo”. Imperial College London was the only UK University certified by ESA.

3). Pioneered the creation of the first commercial service: GNSS Correction Services with Integrity, and Functional safety. The groundbreaking real-time service is radically transforming GNSS applications and enables previously unachievable technologies, presenting opportunities for the next era of GNSS correction services for safety-critical uses. The service: 1) is benefiting more than 2.5 billion users for positioning within 2 seconds (rather than 30 seconds), enabling significantly improved personal mobility; 2) for the first time, enables GNSS-embedded mobile phones to provide lane-level positioning and navigation; 3) is among the first being certified (by SGS, a world leading certification company) and adopted by the world-leading car companies (e.g. BMW )for positioning and navigation with integrity in autonomous driving.

He is an Editorial Board member and the GNSS Integrity Topical Collection editor of the journal GPS Solutions, an Associate Editor of Journal of Navigation, and WG3 chairman of Special Committee 134 within the Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services (RTCM). The committee makes international standards on Integrity Monitoring for High Accuracy GNSS-Based Applications.

Dr Feng is a Chartered Engineer(CEng), a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), the Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN), and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT). His RIN Fellowship certificate was presented (photo above) by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (the husband of HRH Queen Elizabeth II) .
