BIO
Dr Sabine Ernst is a cardiac electrophysiologist with special expertise in complex arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmia in both paediatric and adult patients.
Sabine is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. She has been a Reader at Imperial College London since 2012 and a Professor of Practice since 2019.
Expertise
Dr Ernst is one of the pioneers of remote magnetic navigation. She has established this technique from its initiation to becoming a clinical routine procedure using state-of-the-art equipment including advanced 3D-mapping techniques. Patients with congenital heart disease, complex anatomy and arrhythmias especially benefit from the technique and form a major part in Dr Ernst's clinical work. She has invented the Alternative access for Remote Magnetic (ARM) approach, which allows performing invasive electrophysiologic (EP) procedures via the vessels of the arm(s) instead of the groin(s).
In addition, Dr Ernst's research has focused on novel imaging techniques to visualise the autonomic nervous system. This aims to better understand the nervous system's role in the development and management of cardiac arrhythmias.
journals & books
Together with Professor Yen Ho, Dr Ernst published a book entitled Anatomy for Cardiac Electrophysiologists, which is now also available in Chinese. She has published extensively in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and catheter ablation, and is a highly regarded speaker on innovation and technology at national and international conferences, lecturing on these subjects each year at the European Society of Cardiology's annual congress. Dr Ernst also regularly organises courses within the UK and abroad.
Dr Ernst serves on the editorial board of a number of scientific journals, including European Heart Journal, Europace, the Journal of Interventional Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, Herzschrittmacher + Elektrophysiologie [German], and Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology. She has been associate editor for Heart and is currently an associate editor for Heart Rhythm Journal.
