BIO

Sungano Chigogora is a Principal Teaching Fellow on the MSc Epidemiology and Master of Public Health, whose expansive role includes curriculum development, teaching, assessing and supporting students. She holds a Master of Education in University Learning and Teaching (Imperial College London). Sungano has a holistic approach to teaching and is committed to engendering learner self-efficacy, belonging and inclusion, to support learning in a stimulating, supportive, transparent and accessible learning environment.

Sungano is an epidemiologist (PhD) with broad interests in the social determinants of health, mental health through the life course, healthy ageing, and the double burden of disease in developing countries. She completed her doctoral training at University College London (UCL), where she investigated predictors of depression in older people.

As a visiting student at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Sungano completed the Causal Inference in Epidemiology module (EPI 289), and applied causal methods to her doctoral research under the supervision of Professor Miguel Hernan. She has since used marginal structural models with inverse probability of treatment weights (IPTWs) in a collaborative project with the Child Policy Research Unit at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (funded by the Department of Health). This project investigated whether increasing physical activity according to policy recommendations and trial evidence could reduce population prevalence and social inequalities in child mental health.

Sungano completed a postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Nursing (DTN) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and is a Registered General Nurse.
