BIO

Dr. Shubham Awasthi is a Radar Remote Sensing scientist with extensive expertise in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Remote Sensing, Multi-Temporal InSAR, SAR Polarimetry, and AI-driven geospatial modelling. He earned his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, where his research focused on developing advanced SAR-based methodologies for snow parameter retrieval and land deformation monitoring. His doctoral work involved sophisticated modelling and algorithm development for extracting geophysical parameters from multi-sensor SAR datasets, contributing to both environmental and hazard assessment applications.

He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Imperial College London, working on an ESA/UKSA-funded project for the ESA/NASA EnVision mission to Venus, launching in 2031. In this role, he is developing advanced software tools, SAR algorithms, and processing approaches to support planetary radar investigations and surface characterisation for Venus. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Awasthi worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Virginia Tech, USA, where he contributed to a NASA-funded project focused on groundwater-withdrawal–induced vertical land motion (VLM) estimation and aquifer compaction modelling for the Chesapeake Bay region using multi-temporal SAR datasets.

Dr. Awasthi’s research spans multi-temporal and hybrid SAR analysis, polarimetric decomposition techniques, SAR tomography, and deep learning for SAR-based feature extraction and predictive modelling. He has developed end-to-end SAR processing workflows—from pre-processing and noise reduction to advanced time-series analysis and spatiotemporal modelling—applicable across diverse geophysical, environmental, and planetary science applications at local, regional, and national scales.
