BIO
Richard is a public health physician with a special interest in health care, health workforce and health system management. Richard leads the Undergraduate Public Health Education (UGPH) unit within Imperial's School of Public Health. The UGPH team is a multidisciplinary group of public health doctors, primary care physicians and scientists who deliver education, training and research across population health sciences.
In addition to his work in Public Health, Richard is extensively involved in medical education. Richard leads population health and epidemiology within Imperial College School of Medicine and has established the UK's first core undergraduate medical course in Lifestyle Medicine. He is also the GMC-accredited higher specialty educational supervisor for Public Health Medicine for the university.
Richard has board-level experience leading public health portfolios on integrated care, population health management, public mental health and substance misuse. During the COVID-19 pandemic he led the local contact tracing programme alongside other health protection duties.
Richard trained at Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine before working in hospital medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neurosciences (at King's College London). He moved to Imperial College London as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Public Health Medicine. Since then he has held a wide range of roles across the NHS, local government, national government and private sector including as Senior Policy Advisor to the UK's Department of Health and Social Care.
