RESEARCH
Our research activity is focussed on complex nanophotonic systems, photonic networks and time-varying metamaterials.
TIME VARYING METAMATERIALS
Metamaterials have revolutionised the way we control light transport and generation. Yet, to date, they rely on static and passive architectures, only redistributing incident wave energy - for example in a metalens, or a cloak - with no power to locally absorb or produce it to enhance responses. We are now studying metamaterials that change abruptly in time, allowing to control the light frequency.
COMPLEX PHOTONIC NETWORKS
Complex nanophotonic networks are a web of sub wavelength waveguides coupled together which offer a unique approach to light transport and light emission control.
UNCONVENTIONAL AND RANDOM LASING for NEUROMORPHIC COMPUTING
Lasers are directional and monochromatic sources of radiation. Contrary to common beliefs none of these properties are key to a laser, as the only requirement is that the radiation is originated by stimulated emission instead of spontaneous emission. While spontaneous emission is ubiquitous, as in an ordinary lamp for example, stimulation is a complicate process that requires light trapping and optical amplification. Disordered media can trap light via multiple scattering and sustain stimulate emission as unconventional source of laser light: random lasing.
We use random lasers as the hardware which powers prototype neuromorphic computers.
