RESEARCH
Intercultural feedback literacy
Richard is currently conducting research on the cultural and linguistic factors in feedback processes, aiming to incorporate intercultural competence within existing frameworks of student and teacher feedback literacy.
Performative aspects of teaching
Richard recently published a book on performative aspects of teaching in higher education, drawing on techniques from the performing arts to increase university teachers' confidence (Routledge, 2020).
Introduction to university teaching
Richard recently published a textbook titled Introduction to University Teaching (with Mary Seabrook, King’s College London). The book is aimed at new teachers in higher education and supports progress towards AdvanceHE/HEA Fellowship, particularly AFHEA (Sage, 2021). A second edition has been commissioned and is due for publication in Autumn 2025.
Other research areas
Richard has previously published on corpus-based approaches and drama pedagogy in interpreter education, and the role of students as teaching assistants in the language classroom. His ongoing research interests include: learning and teaching strategies in multilingual and multicultural classrooms; intercultural feedback literacy; development of teacher expertise; and academic practice development of GTAs and early career academics.
