BIO

Petya Atanasova is an Imperial College Research Fellow at the department of Economics and Public Policy, Imperial Business School, under the sponsorship of Dr Laure de Preux. Her research expertise is interdisciplinary, spanning environmental health, health inequalities, public policies, global health and nutrition.

Her primary research agenda focuses on how modifiable features of the natural and built environment, such as food retails, advertising, green spaces, and air pollution, affect noncommunicable diseases and multimorbidity in low- and middle-income countries. She is particularly interested in the economic and public policy implications of these exposures, and in generating evidence to inform more equitable and effective prevention strategies. Her current projects include mapping and characterising environmental features that influence health; developing new exposure metrics using community-informed, spatial, and routinely collected data; and identifying causal relationships between environmental exposures and chronic disease.

Petya joined Imperial as a PhD student at the Section of Nutrition Research in the Faculty of Medicine. She holds a Research Master’s degree in Neuroeconomics from Maastricht University and a BSc in Cognitive Neuroscience from Tilburg University in the Netherlands.
