BIO
Paul Elliott trained in medicine and mathematics at the University of Cambridge and then in clinical medicine and epidemiology at St Mary's Hospital London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine as a Wellcome Trust Clinical Fellow. He has an MSc in Epidemiology (1983) from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and completed a PhD in Epidemiology (1991) under the mentorship of Professor Geoffrey Rose. He became Head of the Environmental Epidemiology Unit there in 1990. In 1995 he was appointed Chair in Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine at Imperial College London. He is an honorary consultant in public health medicine in the Directorate of Primary Care and Public Health of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. His research is on the epidemiology of chronic diseases, with a focus on cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases, and hypertension. He is Director of the MRC Centre for Environment and Health, and the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit (SAHSU). He also leads a work programme on molecular epidemiology in the Imperial Dementia Research Institute and co-leads a Health Data Research UK driver programme in the social and environmental determinants of health. His contribution to public health research, most recently in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as director of the REACT community surveillance study was recognised with the award of a CBE in the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours List and Fellowship of The Royal Society in 2024.
