Mr. Pierluigi Cuomo is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in London.
He studied medicine in Italy at the University of Florence where he graduated in 1999.
After obtaining his specialist degree in Trauma and Orthopaedics, he moved to London to perform basic science research on knee biomechanics at the Imperial Mechanical Engineering Department where he got his PhD degree. He focused on ACL reconstruction biomechanics and in vivo instrumented assessment of knee function. Furthermore, he actively contributed to the ideation and design of surgical instruments for ACL reconstruction. He presented at national and international conferences (BASK, ESSKA, EFORT, ISAKOS) and was awarded with several prizes from the Italian Society of Arthroscopy and the Italian Society of knee surgery. Also, he was offered the prestigious ACL travelling fellowship.
In 2007 he became a substantive consultant at the University Hospital of Florence, Italy, in the world renown Orthopaedic Unit for Bone Cancer and Joint Reconstruction. He matured extensive surgical experience in orthopaedic trauma, hip and knee replacement, knee soft tissue reconstruction and orthopaedic oncology. In these years he mainly focused on clinical research for oncologic conditions and revision surgery. He presented at EFORT, EMSOS and ISOLS and he was study coordinator on behalf of EMSOS for a multicentric investigation on desmoid fibromatosis.
In 2019 he moved back to London to join The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore for fifteen months, where he worked as a consultant in the Sarcoma and Joint Reconstruction Unit. He enhanced the start of a research collaboration between Stanmore and the Imperial to investigate function after major orthopaedic oncology procedures. In 2020 he has been appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Department of Bioengineering and he is currently focusing on several projects to improve outcomes in patients undergoing bone and joint reconstruction.
