Professor Onn Min Kon is a Respiratory Physician and the Lead Clinician for the TB service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He runs a busy TB service at St Mary’s Hospital which is a tertiary centre for MDR-TB and a regional centre for endobronchial ultrasound. He is also Lead Clinician for the North West London TB sector and chair of the London TB Clinical Leadership Group.
Professor Kon is a past president of the British Thoracic Society. He was also previously chair of the British Thoracic Society Joint Tuberculosis Committee and the British Thoracic Society Specialist Advisory Committee. He was previously chair of the National MDRTB Clinical Advice Service and was involved in setting up this service in 2018. He has served on the Department of Health Find and Treat Steering Committee. He has interests in the clinical and immuno-diagnosis of TB, the delivery of care and management of TB.
Professor Kon obtained his undergraduate degree in Medicine at University College and Middlesex Hospital School of Medicine before training in respiratory medicine at the Royal Brompton, St Mary's and Charing Cross hospitals. He performed research on immunosuppressants in asthma under the supervision of Professor Barry Kay and Professor Neil Barnes at the Royal Brompton Hospital and London Chest Hospital.
He is an investigator in the Health Protection Research Unit for Respiratory Infections at Imperial College London.
Professor Kon organises and runs on behalf of the NIHR HPRU for Respiratory Infections and Public Health England, the London Advanced TB course which is an annual intensive clinical TB course designed to update clinicians in all aspects of TB care.
He is also involved in studies evaluating the immunology and novel therapies in airway disease and based at the Imperial Clinical Respiratory Research Unit at St Mary’s Hospital. He has close academic ties with Professor Sebastian Johnston, Professor Peter Openshaw and Professor Chris Chiu. Along with Professor Trevor Hansel, he has helped develop non-invasive sampling techniques in the airway.
He has over 200 peer reviewed publications in tuberculosis and airway disease and is a regular lecturer for Imperial College London.
